Delightful And Healthy, Quaker Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped Rice Snacks Surprise!

The Good: Wonderful flavor, Nothing bad in them, Fairly healthy
The Bad: Not at all filling, Comparatively expensive
The Basics: Quaker Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks are a great and healthy salty snack . . . that doesn’t taste much like a salty snack!

Locally, there is a new discount store and I have been pleasantly surprised by how much good, healthy snacks they have been getting in. I’ve been getting a number of snacks from Quaker through the new discount store and one of my new favorites are the Quaker Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks I picked up. Despite a change in name, Quaker Popped rice snacks have a good reputation as a decent snack for health-conscious individuals (as my wife and I have become!). This is a flavor that is one of the most real-to-flavor snacks produced by Quaker, even if the sea salt on the rice snacks is not very strong at all.

Basics

Quaker is perhaps best known for making oatmeal, but for a long time has made granola bars and other healthy snacks. Their Popped rice snacks come in several flavors and the Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks are one of many salty flavors that seem to have survived from the Quakes line to the Popped line (which seems to be the same treat, just renamed).

The Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks come in a 3 oz. bag that is like a little potato chip bag. The bag holds just under forty-eight Popped rice snacks. Sixteen Popped rice snack represents a single serving and each of the Popped rice snacks are 1 3/4" in diameter by 3/8” thick, mimicking the look and feel of a mini-rice cake. The Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks are mostly white with a light powdering on them (which I suppose represents the sea salt) and occasional obvious spots of pepper.

Ease Of Preparation

Eating a Quaker Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snack is simple. After removing the mini-rice cake from the package, simply stick it in your mouth. There is no particularly complicated equation to eating this snack; it is an entirely ready-to-eat food!

Taste

The Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks smell powerfully of pepper. The scent is strong and distinctive and instantly recognizable. Anyone who likes pepper will find the aroma that comes from these Popped snacks to be very inviting.

In the mouth, the Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped snacks are surprisingly unsalty and not as dry as one might expect. Instead, the powder that coats the puffed rice snacks lends itself to a more mild flavor that actually is a little sweeter on the tongue initially than the smell would insinuate. There is almost a powdered, white cheddar flavor/texture with these snacks that plays on the tongue for the few seconds before the strong, recognizable flavor of black pepper hits! The black pepper flavor is bold, but not unpleasant; it opens the eyes without burning the tongue. The result is a flavorful treat that is not really salty and is surprisingly addictive.

There is, shockingly enough, no aftertaste to the Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks!

Nutrition

Quaker Popped rice snacks are intended as a snack, not a meal, and they are fairly healthy, more by not having anything bad in them, as opposed to being loaded with a lot of nutrients. Each 30 gram serving of the Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snack represent a single serving and is sixteen mini-rice cakes. Made primarily of whole grain brown rice, corn, and sunflower oil there is nothing in the Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks that was unpronounceable. This is a mostly-natural food product with a dietary disclaimer that this flavor contains milk ingredients.

Quaker's Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks have 130 calories, forty of which are from fat. A full serving represents 7% of one's RDA of carbohydrates and these are cholesterol free. There are two grams of protein to be had by eating an Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snack. These are not a significant source of any vitamins or minerals, though they do have a gram of dietary fiber.

Storage/Cleanup

As a healthy snack, Quaker Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snack remain fresh so long as they are kept in their bag. Opened, they will absorb moisture from the air and become squishy in an unappealing way.

As long as the cakes are sealed, they remain fresh and the only real clean-up for them comes from wiping up crumbs. These do not stain clothes, though.

Overall

Quaker Sea Salt & Cracked Black Pepper Popped rice snacks might not be filling, but they are flavorful, healthy, and reasonably priced, making them well worth stocking up on!
