If You Can Find Them, Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops Are Surprisingly Worthwhile!

The Good: Tastes good, Nothing really bad in them, Inexpensive
The Bad: No real nutritional value
The Basics: Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops are a delightful alternative to ice cream . . . if you can find them!

I love ice cream. I have not, traditionally, been a fan of Fla-Vor-Ice pops. Fla-Vor-Ice pops are the individual tubes of fluid that one freezes to make a frozen treat that is, frankly, a letdown to anyone who truly wants ice cream. And yet . . . when my wife and I were out and I saw the box of Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops that purported to contain real Hershey’s Cocoa, I actually heard myself do a little intake of breath that indicated on some level I actually wanted them!

So, she picked them up for me (she’s such a sweetie!) and, as it turned out, they were delightful. So long as one is expecting a frozen water dessert treat, Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops actually deliver something that exceeds expectations. They certainly exceeded mine, and by no small margin!

Basics

Fla-Vor-Ice comes in a package of twelve 2 ounce tubes that are connected on the sides. The box of twelve was available locally on clearance for $2.50 and for twelve servings it was, frankly, a steal! Oddly, until we found them on clearance, we had not seen them before!

Ease Of Preparation

Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops is a very basic frozen dessert. They come unfrozen, must be shaken up and then frozen. After being frozen for about twelve hours in our deep freeze freezer (reviewed here!) the Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops were frozen solid and ready to go!

Because they come in the individual plastic tubes, one must cut the top off each one prior to consumption. This gives one access to the Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops. To consume, simply push up from the bottom and the icy mass rises to the (now) open end of the plastic tube.

Taste

The Fudge Pops have no discernable smell. Cutting open the plastic did not hint anything of the flavor that would come from the Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops.

The Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops are flavorful in a way that their lack of smell makes entirely surprising! The flavor is a cold, dark chocolate that is dry in taste, but distinctly chocolate. The flavor makes it impossible to deny that there is real cocoa in them. They are a more subtle form of sweetness to them, not overtly sweet, despite being flavorful. As the Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops melt in the mouth, they take on a strong flavor that is similar to that of cold coffee or frozen fudge as opposed to something weaker, like a milk chocolate.

The Fudge Pops have a very subtle dry aftertaste, but it dissipates within two minutes of the last bite.

Nutrition

The Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops is a very frozen dessert. Each 57 gram tube is a single serving. In the 1 tube serving, there are only 60 calories, and they are fat free. One serving also has 15 grams of carbohydrates (that’s 5% of the RDA!) and 35 mg of Sodium (1% RDA). There are no other nutrients in the Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops.

Fla-Vor-Ice has simple ingredients, too. Made primarily of water, high fructose corn syrup, and sugar, Fudge Pops are not a bad frozen dessert! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list and there are no allergy notes on the box.

Storage/Clean-Up

Fla-Vor-Ice is water-based, so when it is not frozen, it is liquid and does not easily spoil. I was surprised by the May 2014 expiration date on the box, if only for the fact that I would have guessed these would have lasted longer, even unfrozen!

The Fudge Pops are very dark brown and will certainly stain light clothing, at the very least. When the frozen dessert melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the fluid wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

Fla-Vor-Ice Fudge Pops might not be ice cream, but for those watching their health, saving space in the freezer or who want to travel and have something frozen that is reliably good when they get to their destination, these are a great solution!
