The Good: Very nutritious, Myah eats it and seems to enjoy it.
The Bad: Comparatively expensive, Myah is not so enthusiastic about it that she shows a strong positive reaction for it.
The Basics: Myah meandered her way through the four pound bag of NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula adult dog food, making me think it was okay, but not quite worth the price.
The holidays are, as it turns out, a great time to experiment with different dog foods around my house. If it seems like I’m producing quite a few more pet food reviews of late, it’s not an illusion: Myah and Gollum have had their diets shaken up about once a week for the last two months while I build a pretty extensive cache of pet product reviews. Because Myah, our Siberian Husky, has managed to snag a number of yummy treats from my cooking throughout the holidays, she has been much less tied to her dog dish and thus, as I change up her food each week, I learn pretty clearly what she will actually enjoy. One of the bags of food that easily survived its one-week trial and Myah seems more indifferent to returning to when her diet becomes more regular again is the NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food. The fifteen pound bag is one of the more expensive ones we brought in for this grand reviewing experiment and the fact that she went through so little of it says quite a bit, though it seems to be a quality product and she does not avoid it by any means!
NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food is a food that prides itself on having quality ingredients and providing a wide array of nutritional benefits and while Myah eats it, she does not get excited for it the way she does for many, many other dog foods of late.
Basics
A single serving of NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food is a cup to a cup and a half for a big dog like Myah and she is supposed to get two servings per day, so a fifteen pound bag should last us at least a month with our five year-old fifty pound Siberian Husky. Each piece of NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food is a brown disc that is very mealy in its texture and quite hard. They are approximately 1/2" in diameter and 3/16” thick. Myah often eats these several pellets at a time.
Ease Of Preparation
As a dry dog food, preparation of NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food is as easy as opening a bag and measuring out the pellets inside. There is no further prep needed.
Myah’s Reaction
Myah loves this food. The food has a delightfully spicy scent to it. In fact, the aroma intrigued me because it smelled more liked spiced sweet potatoes than anything even remotely fishy. Myah, surprisingly, did not respond enthusiastically to the aroma. Instead, she consumed the NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food when it was in her bowl and she was hungry. This was one of the first dog foods I have ever seen her wander toward. She did not necessarily come for it when I was filling her bowl (as she does with foods that she loves) and she did not avoid it when it was in her bowl (which she does with the few foods she loathes). NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food inspired the most neutral reaction our choosy dog has ever, to my knowledge, given!
The Potato & Salmon Formula left Myah’s breath largely unaltered; it smelled no worse for her eating this food, but she has pretty excellent canine dental health, so her mouth seldom smells bad!
Nutrition
NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food has a delightful scent that dissipates quickly and is made with trendy pomegranates and with Omega 3 & 6 fatty acids. Made primarily of salmon, salmon meal, and potatoes, only a few of the ingredients are natural before the list turns into a chemistry equation. After “garlic,” the Salmon & Potato Formula is a virtual vitamin pill. According to the guaranteed analysis, NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food has at least 24% crude protein, 13% crude fat, but no more than 6% crude fiber and 10% moisture. As a dry dog food, it is highly recommended that you have adequate water available for your dog when serving it NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food.
Overall
NutriSource PureVita Salmon & Potato Formula dog food is a good dog food, but because the fifteen pound bag runs well over thirty dollars, I expected something more than just “good.” Alas, despite the superlative ingredients, this ends up being a remarkably average dog food.
