The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix: An Amazing Dog Food At A High Cost!

The Good: Great ingredients, Probably the most healthy dog food, Myah absolutely loves it!
The Bad: Very expensive, Requires a lot of preparation
The Basics: The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix might be Myah's new favorite dog food, but it is a tremendous expense for our geriatric dog's happiness!

I have gotten spoiled by my local discount store and local grocery store. Where I live, there is an amazing discount store that prioritizes selling its merchandise over making a high profit. As a result, sometimes, my wife and I get absolutely incredible deals. A perfect example of this is that a month and a half ago, we were at the store and there was a lone seven pound box of The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix. The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food is half the mix needed to make the dog food and while I was initially thrilled at the $6.99 price at the discount store, I knew two things: 1. It would be vastly more expensive other places and 2. The cost of usage would be far, far higher than the $6.99 initial investment given that Base Mix requires more ingredients to be viable.

The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix requires meat (or other protein) to actually make the dog food. Fortunately for my family, we have a local grocery store that clearances meat on the daily. I find meal for fifty percent off every day and, as a result, I saved quite a bit of money off both the initial cost and the continued cost of usage of the The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix. If I lived anywhere else or had to try to make The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix work on any sort of budget, it would be impossible to recommend this dog food . . . regardless of how much Myah absolutely loved it!

Basics

A single serving of The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food for a dog Myah’s size – she’s about seventy pounds now - is one and one eighth cups of the dry mix per day, split into two meals. We have been feeding Myah only one meal a day from our box of The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix in order to make the Base Mix last longer and to save money on the meat that the dog food requires. As a result, we have made the seven pound box last a month and a half and we are only about a third of the way through the package! The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix is a dehydrated vegetable mix that is specially formulated for dogs, even though it has human grade quality ingredients. The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix looks a lot like potpourri and is a high-quality dog food that is pretty incredible and based on prioritizing nutrition and the quality of the ingredients over affordability or ease of preparation.

Ease Of Preparation

As a high quality dog food, The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix is only a portion of what one needs in order to make this into a full meal. For a big dog like my Siberian Husky, each day she gets 1/2 cup of the Grain Free Base Mix with 1/2 cup of whatever cooked up meat I have found at the grocery store on clearance within the day or two. I mix the 1/2 cup of Grain Free Base Mix and 1/2 cup of chopped up, cooked up meat with 3/4 cups of near-boiling water. After the water is added, stir up the concoction and wait three minutes. That gives the mix enough time to reconstitute. The three minutes also gives the dog food a chance to cool down so that Myah will not burn her mouth on it.

Myah’s Reaction

Myah loves The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food. It does not matter what meat I add to the Grain Free Base Mix, Myah literally jumps up and down for this dog food. Similarly, the moment I begin preparation for feeding Myah and open the bag inside the box of The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix, Myah invades the kitchen (like she is not supposed to!). When Myah gets fed the Grain Free Base Mix as a dog food with meat, it is easier to take her outside to bathroom her than it is to keep her calm while she waits for the food to reconstitute with the water. Myah loves the Grain Free Base Mix that much that there is little keeping her calm when it is being prepared. Myah eats the Grain Free Base Mix faster than any other dog food I have ever given her!

Nutrition

The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food smells like a vegetable stew when the bag inside the box is opened. The Grain Free Base Mix is easily, by far, the most nutritious dog food I have ever fed Myah. Made primarily of Dehydrated Sweet Potatoes, Dehydrated Peas, and Dehydrated Cabbage, balanced against whatever meat one adds to the mix, the ingredients are almost all natural and recognizable before becoming a chemistry equation designed to boost the health of the dog. According to the guaranteed analysis, The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food (without the meat one adds!) has at least 10.5% crude protein, 6% crude fat, but no more than 10% crude fiber and 10% moisture. Even though one has to add water to reconstitute the The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food with water and meat, it is highly recommended one have adequate water available to one's dog while feeding them the Grain Free Base Mix. Myah frequently drinks quite a bit after she wolfs down the Grain Free Base Mix!

Overall

The Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix dog food would be a perfect dog food and for those who hunt their own meat, but for those of us who have to pay for both the Mix and the meat, it is a much tougher sell!
