Utterly Unimpressive Seasoning: Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning Lacks Zest!

The Good: Relatively inexpensive, Not terribly unhealthy
The Bad: Not terribly nutritious, Not at all flavorful!
The Basics: Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning failed to flavor my popcorn in an even remotely interesting way . . . no matter how much of it I used!

For the holidays, my wife presented me with a truly awesome gift: a set of popcorn seasonings and oils from Kernel Season’s! This, naturally, is one of the easiest ways into my heart (truthfully, she was already very firmly lodged there!), and I have been consuming popcorn with renewed vigor. Unfortunately, not all of the seasonings are created equal and the first real (surprise) dud for me was the Sour Cream & Onion flavoring. This was such a disappointment for me in that no matter how much I used, the flavor on my popcorn never improved.

Basics

Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning is a white powder with tiny colored flecks (even money says they are green, but they are very small and it’s hard to tell) that one sprinkles on their hot popcorn. My wife picked it up in the .9 oz. plastic container as part of a multipack. After removing the safety seal below the flip-top cap, one has easy access to the Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning. The seasoning is basically a spice that adheres to the hot popcorn or liquefied margarine on popcorn.

Ease Of Preparation

Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning is exceptionally easy to use. After the popcorn is popped, add oil or spray margarine to the popcorn; I have taken to using Kernel Season’s Butter Popcorn Spritzer (reviewed here!) for consistency. Then, flip the lid to the Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning and sprinkle it on your popcorn. The container to the Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning has holes, much like any other major spice container. When one is done applying the seasoning, simple press closed the spice container.

Taste

On its own, the Sour Cream & Onion popcorn seasoning smells surprisingly subtle and more like sour cream than onion. This might be one of the least aromatic popcorn seasonings from Kernel Season’s!

Unfortunately, straight out, the Sour Cream & Onion is creamy, but strangely lacking in flavor. The milky taste has a very minor onion kick about a minute after it is consumed, so this seasoning is more of an aftertaste than dominated by a true flavor.

On popcorn, the flavor is equally underwhelming. After spraying on quite a bit of the Kernel Season’s Butter Popcorn Spray to adhere the Sour Cream & Onion seasoning to the popcorn, I was surprised that there was not much flavor. It’s not salty, not particularly sour, and not even overly creamy. After I applied three times the recommended amount (and the amount I have needed for any other flavor), I finally managed to get my popcorn tasting slightly sour, like the aftertaste of sour cream.

Nutrition

Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning is not actually that bad on the nutrition front. In a 1/4 teaspoon serving (there are 35 servings in the .9 oz container), there are only two calories. With only 35 mg. of Sodium, I was pleasantly surprised that a serving only represented 1% of the RDA of Sodium! There are no other nutrients in the Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning.

On the ingredients front, Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning is not terrible either! The Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning consists mostly of corn starch, maltodextrin, and nonfat milk. There is actually nothing unpronounceable in this spice. It does, however, contain milk, so lactose intolerant people and Vegans cannot have this. It is, however, Kosher.

Storage/Clean-up

I could find no expiration date on my container of Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning, but given that the final ingredients appear to be preservatives, it seems reasonable that – stored at room temperature – this will last indefinitely.

If the Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning gets on clothing, it might stain, especially dark clothes where the white would be clearly offset. Consult a fabric care guide for how best to get this out of any outfit you get this on. It easily wipes off any nonporous surface it gets on.

Overview

The Kernel Season’s Sour Cream & Onion Popcorn Seasoning does not taste bad, but it does not taste like much of anything, much less zesty onion or particularly sour cream. The result is a popcorn seasoning that is an unfortunate, but utter, waste of money.
