The Good: Flavor is not bad, Generally good ingredients, Inexpensive
The Bad: Limited time nature, Not very sweet, Nutritionally poor
The Basics: Edy's Twinkies Ice Cream is not the most flavorful ice cream, tasting just like the outside of a Twinkie without any real flavor analogous to the sugary center of the Hostess pastry!
As a child, I did not get a lot of sugary snacks in my lunch. My father was into not wasting money on snacks and he was more into nutrition than fun foods. So, I don't have any real connections from my childhood with Twinkies snacks. As a result, I have no real reason for getting irrationally excited when I saw Edy's Twinkies ice cream at my local grocery store. The new, limited edition, flavor has just arrived in my little town and when I saw it, I actually felt a pull to pick it up.
Edy’s Twinkies Ice Cream is pretty much a basic yellow cake flavored ice cream and the truth is, I've had better renditions of cake flavored ice creams because those tend to include frosting in their flavoring. The Twinkie's Ice Cream does not. This is an ice cream that tastes entirely like the outside of a Twinkie.
Basics
Edy’s ice cream comes in a one and a half quart cylindrical container. The Twinkies Ice Cream is a generally smooth, creamy ice cream: the basic ice cream has tiny bits of Twinkies embedded throughout the ice cream. The Edy's Twinkies ice cream appears to have tiny pockets of Twinkies filling in the ice cream as well, but I could not find any difference in flavor from those different colored bits. At (locally) $5.49 a half gallon, the Edy’s ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream. This is a Limited Edition ice cream, available from Edy’s only for the past few weeks and for an indeterminate amount of time.
Ease Of Preparation
Edy’s Twinkies Ice Cream is a very basic ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Twinkies Ice Cream.
Taste
The Twinkies Ice Cream smells like yellow cake, exactly what one might expect out of a Twinkies flavored ice cream. The aroma is subtle, but recognizable. The scent is inviting enough to attract those who love Twinkies.
On the flavor front, tastes like yellow cake in ice cream form. This is a fairly dry ice cream, with a muted cake flavor. Indeed, the cake flavor is so true and accurate that the added pieces of Twinkies in the ice cream manifest more as a texture than an actual flavor. Looking at the ice cream, there were tiny packets of white in the ice cream, but they were no sweeter than the dry cake additives or the rest of the ice cream.
Edy's Twinkies ice cream has a very subtle, dry cake flavored aftertaste that lasts for about five minutes after the last of the ice cream is consumed.
Nutrition
The Edy’s Twinkies Ice Cream is a fairly smooth ice cream with tiny cake chunk (Twinkie) additives. The one and a half quart container represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 160 calories, 70 of which are from fat. The eight grams of fat represent 12% of the RDA of fat, with 23% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the four and a half grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 20 mg of cholesterol (that’s 7% of the RDA!) and 50 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 6% of the RDA of Calcium and 4% of the RDA of Vitamin A in the Twinkies Ice Cream.
Edy’s Twinkies Ice Cream has decent ingredients, despite the generally poor nutritional benefits of the ice cream. Made primarily of Skim Milk, cream, and sugar, Twinkies is a decent ice cream! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. Obviously, it contains milk ingredients. The Edy's Twinkies ice cream is also marked with allergy warnings for wheat, egg, and soy. As a result, Twinkies ice cream is neither Kosher nor gluten free.
Storage/Clean-Up
Edy’s ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months. The package I purchased today had an expiration date of December 28, 2017.
The Twinkies ice cream is a light yellow ice cream that will stain any light colored fabrics. The ice cream is not sticky and the tiny bits of white I saw (not tasted) in the ice cream did not have a noticeable difference in consistency from the rest of the ice cream. When the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily, at least with a hot cloth. If there are Twinkie bits in the ice cream that melts, that might require a little extra effort, but it is still a fairly easy ice cream to clean up after.
Overall
Edy’s Twinkies ice cream is good, but not exceptional and hardly evocative of Twinkies specifically. But for a decent cake-flavored ice cream without a frosting flavor to it, the Edy's Twinkies Ice Cream fits the bill nicely!
