Ferrara Chocolate’s Milk Chocolate Peppermint Chocolate Orange Is A Mediocre Treat, But A Good One!

The Good: Incredible taste, Fairly affordable, Nothing bad in the ingredients
The Bad: Seasonal availability, Lack of nutritional value.
The Basics: Ferrara Chocolate Orange Milk Chocolate Peppermint was easily one of the best surprises to me this past holiday season!

Following trying my wife’s Ferrara Milk Chocolate Toffee Crunch “Chocolate Orange” (reviewed here!) and being somewhat underwhelmed, I lowered my expectations for the Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange my wife gifted me for the holiday. In fact, it took me about an extra week after sampling hers to get over it and crack open the “orange” she bought for me.

I had no reason to fear the Milk Chocolate Peppermint Chocolate Orange! In fact, this was easily the most pleasant culinary surprise of the season for me! As a lover of all things chocolate mint, the Ferrara Peppermint chocolate orange is THE one to buy!

Basics

Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Oranges are a large orange-shaped candy made of chocolate. The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange was sold as a single item, boxed in a festive foil box and wrapped in green foil for $2.99 (though we got ours on sale for 2/$5.00 right before the holiday!).

Each Milk Chocolate Peppermint Orange is a spheroid approximately 2 1/4” in diameter and 2 3/8” tall. Each segment – and there are twenty in each “orange” – is a slice 2 1/4” long, 1” wide and 3/8” thick. Each slice is stamped with a holiday image – reindeer, snowflakes, snowmen, etc. – for a festive, seasonal treat.

Ease Of Preparation

The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange is simple to prepare, though harder than most candies. First, one must remove the wrapped orange from the box and then smack it on a hard, flat surface to crack the segments into their independent slices. Then, simply unwrap the foil on the orange and pull out a slice. Each of the Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange has twenty segments, plus a core, but it is folly to try to consume this product without first fracturing it.

Taste

Ferrara Chocolate Orange Milk Chocolate Peppermint candy smells entirely like mint. The peppermint aroma opens up the sinuses and eagerly invites in the scent of mint with a hint of chocolate on the afterscent.

In the mouth, the Milk Chocolate Peppermint is slightly waxy in texture, though explosively minty. The creamy mint flavor acts more like an aftertaste to the peppermint flavor, which is strong and enticing. In fact, this is one of the best chocolate mint candies I have ever had! The chocolate flavor in this chocolate orange is smooth and creamy, which contrasts the peppermint flavor nicely.

The Milk Chocolate Peppermint chocolate orange leaves a strong, deliberately minty taste in the mouth. The aftertaste endures for about ten minutes after one consumes the chocolate.

Nutrition

The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange makes no claims to be healthy. This is a good thing because they would fail if they did! The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange splits into twenty slices and a serving is considered five slices. Each five slice serving has 240 calories, 120 of which are from fat. There are 20 mg of sodium and only 2 gram of proteins. Obviously high in carbohydrates (28 grams), the chocolate orange has a single gram of dietary fiber. There are no vitamins or other nutritional benefits to Ferrara’s Peppermint Chocolate Orange, outside 6% and 4% of one's RDA of Calcium and Iron, respectively, and 2% of one’s Vitamin A requirements.

The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange slices are candy. The main ingredients in Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Oranges are milk chocolate, peppermint oil, and natural flavors. The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange is not Gluten free or Vegan compliant considering there is soy, milk and traces of almonds, egg, and wheat. There is nothing overly unfamiliar in the ingredient list, so these are not the worst candies ever.

Storage/Clean-Up

Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Oranges are easy enough to store. The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange my wife picked up for me for the holidays had an expiration date of October 9, 2014, but there is absolutely no way it will last until then. Keeping the chocolate orange at room temperature or below seems to keep it fresh for a long period of time.

Clean-up is as easy, unless the chocolate melts onto something. If the chocolate does melt, consult a fabric guide for proper cleaning. Otherwise, there is nothing hard about storing or cleaning up after this candy.

Overall

The Milk Chocolate Peppermint Ferrara Chocolate Orange is a novelty that is enough to satisfy anyone who loves chocolate mint!
