After A Minute On The Tongue, Bubble Gum Peeps Actually Taste Right!

The Good: Inexpensive enough, Taste surprisingly good
The Bad: Lack of nutritional value.
The Basics: Bubble Gum Peeps are good . . . after a moment.

Peeps are a candy that I have a lot of trouble recommending. The marshmallow candies used to be a novelty for Easter, but in recent years, Just Born has been expanding to make their candies available pretty much year round. They have been trying to produce different flavors for their Peeps and many of them do not quite land. So, when I found a pack of Bubble Gum Peeps at Big Lots on discount, I had low expectations. I had not seen the Bubble Gum Peeps in stores before, so to find them when they were hitting clearance did not make me have a lot of confidence in the product.

But then, the taste actually hit and was realistic, so I was actually quite impressed. Despite the fact that the Bubble Gum Peeps did not initially taste like bubble gum, the fact that they get around to the right flavor after a few moments was actually nice.

Basics

Bubble Gum Peeps are a gum flavored marshmallow candy that were available for summer this year. In recent years, to raise their profit margin and compete for other holidays, specialized Peeps have been released for Valentine's Day, Halloween and Christmas in addition to the usual Easter. For summe, Bubble Gum Peeps are usually widely available from anywhere from $.99 - $1.29 for a ten-piece pack of Bubble Gum Peeps.

Each Bubble Gum Peep is almost two inches long by 1 1/2" wide by 1 1/2" tall and they are sugar-coated marshmallow candies. The sugar coating is pink and they are bird-shaped.

Ease Of Preparation

Bubble Gum Peeps are pretty simple to prepare. Simply unwrap the plastic on the plastic tray and pull apart the marshmallow Bubble Gum Peeps. It's that easy. More often than not, the Bubble Gum Peeps are gooey on the side they were attached to the other Peeps at. Simply breaking up the Bubble Gum Peeps and eating them is all the prep this candy requires.

Taste

The Bubble Gum Peeps distinguish themselves by smelling quite a bit like bubble gum. The scent is sugary and strong and distinctive for anyone who loves (or have had a lot of) bubble gum.

The Bubble Gum Peeps do not taste immediately like their namesake. After a minute on the tongue, the sugary coating melts off and the pink center tastes exactly like bubble gum. More than the texture of marshmallow, the flavoring embodies the sweetness of bubble gum that makes these one of the most true flavored Peeps yet created. They are sweet and true flavored.

The Bubble Gum Peeps leave a strangely dry aftertaste, but the aftertaste does not last very long.

Nutrition

Bubble Gum Peeps are not anything that points toward good health, but that's to be expected with candy. The ten Bubble Gum Peeps in a tray represent two servings. A serving has 140 calories, none of which are from fat. There are 15 mg of sodium and only 1 gram of protein. There are no vitamins or other nutritional benefits to Peeps.

Bubble Gum Peeps are primarily made of sugar, corn syrup and gelatin. Bubble Gum Peeps are gluten free and are not Vegan compliant considering there is gelatin and may contain milk. There is nothing overly unfamiliar in the ingredient list, so these are not the worst candies ever.

Storage/Clean-Up

Bubble Gum Peeps are easy enough to store. The Bubble Gum Peeps I bought this summer had an expiration date of February 2014 before I ate them up. Keeping them at room temperature or below seems to keep them fresh for a long period of time.

Clean-up is as easy as wiping up the sugar that falls off them. So long as the Bubble Gum Peep does not melt onto anything, clean-up is that easy. Like the preparation, there is nothing hard about storing or cleaning up after this candy.

Overall

Bubble Gum Peeps are delicious, though the bubble gum flavor does not hit instantly. This makes them a surprisingly fun summer treat!
