The Best Of A Candy That Hasn't Impressed Me: Chocolate Mousse Peeps Are Actually Good!

The Good: Inexpensive enough, Taste surprisingly good
The Bad: Lack of nutritional value.
The Basics: Chocolate Mousse Peeps are flavored with surprisingly realistic and precise flavoring to please chocolate lovers!

Peeps have taken something of a beating at my pen of late. I am not a fan of Peeps (reviewed here!) and the chocolate dipped Peeps (reviewed here!) fared even worse. So, when I picked up the Chocolate Mousse Peeps following Halloween, it was with remarkably low expectations that I tried them for review. I think the best compliment I can give about these is that I had to wrestle these away from my wife . . . and I wanted to! Of all of the flavors of Peeps, the Chocolate Mousse Peeps are the best.

More than that, the Chocolate Mousse Peeps, which were available for Halloween and are now available in most markets for Christmas, are a legitimately good candy in their own right.

Basics

Chocolate Mousse Peeps are a chocolate flavored marshmallow candy that were available for Halloween this year. In recent years, to raise their profit margin and compete for other holidays, specialized Peeps have been released for Valentine's Day, Halloween and Christmas in addition to the usual Easter. For Halloween and now for Christmas, Chocolate Mousse Peeps are usually widely available from anywhere from $.99 - $1.29 for an eight-piece pack of Chocolate Mousse Peeps.

Each Chocolate Mousse Peep is almost two inches long by 3/4" wide by 1/2" tall and they are sugar-coated marshmallow candies. The sugar coating comes in brown and are cat-shaped. The cat Peeps and now the reindeer Peeps come a thin plastic tray wrapped in plastic.

Ease Of Preparation

Chocolate Mousse Peeps are pretty simple to prepare. Simply unwrap the plastic on the plastic tray and pull apart the marshmallow Chocolate Mousse Peeps. It's that easy. More often than not, the Chocolate Mousse Peeps are gooey on the side they were attached to the other Peeps at. Simply breaking up the Chocolate Mousse Peeps and eating them is all the prep this candy requires.

Taste

The Chocolate Mousse Peeps distinguish themselves immediately by smelling like just what they are supposed to. The culinary scientists as Just Born nailed the scent of chocolate mousse perfectly and opening the packages of these Peeps yields a strong, rich chocolate aroma that is undeniable.

That promise is lived up to in a remarkably fun way then the Chocolate Mousse Peep is placed on the tongue. In my experience, the sugar on these Peeps melts away faster, so one is not left with a generically sweet or sugary flavor on the tongue for more that five seconds. Instead, the sugar melts away and the sweet is replaced by the dry flavor many of us associate with thick, rich chocolate. Far from the dark chocolate flavor I love, though, the marshmallow texture and more mild milk chocolate flavor simulates the precise flavor of chocolate mousse, and a good one at that!

The Chocolate Mousse Peeps leave no aftertaste, though I did notice more often than not a little of the sugar would remain upon my lips and I would have an additional sweet kick after the primary taste was disippated.

Nutrition

Chocolate Mousse Peeps are not anything that points toward good health, but that's to be expected with candy. The eight Chocolate Mousse Peeps in a tray represent two servings. A serving has 120 calories, none of which are from fat. There is 15 mg of sodium and only 1 gram of protein. There are no vitamins or other nutritional benefits to Peeps.

Chocolate Mousse Peeps are primarily made of sugar, corn syrup and gelatin. Chocolate Mousse Peeps are gluten free and are not Vegan compliant considering there is gelatin and may contain milk. There is nothing overly unfamiliar in the ingredient list, so these are not the worst candies ever.

Storage/Clean-Up

Chocolate Mousse Peeps are easy enough to store. The Chocolate Mousse Peeps my wife bought right after Halloween had an expiration date of June 2012 before I ate them up. Keeping them at room temperature or below seems to keep them fresh for a long period of time.

Clean-up is as easy as wiping up the sugar that falls off them. So long as the Chocolate Mousse Peep does not melt onto anything, clean-up is that easy. Like the preparation, there is nothing hard about storing or cleaning up after this candy.

Overall

Chocolate Mousse Peeps are surprisingly good and worth getting for Halloween or Christmas or whenever they are available . . . for as long as they are available!
