The Basics: Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food does what it promises, and does it well, but it is expensive for all the benefits it offers!
My newer cat, Elim, came to us sick and he has remained sick. It does not always help, either, that Timber, our slightly older cat occasionally hogs the area where we place the dry food for the cats. That has not been as much of a problem considering Elim loves wet cat food, but Timber has put on a little weight and it encouraged my wife and I to look into weight management dry cat foods. That was how we came upon the Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food and after using it with Timber for the past month, it has proven to us that it works!
Basics
Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food is a cat food formulated for adult cats to help them burn fat and regulate their metabolism as they age and settle down a bit. The Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food regularly comes in a five pound paper bag that is priced in our local grocery store at about $12.99. As a thrifty individual, this is a bit much for the volume of cat food and made me instantly disinclined toward it. But, in our effort to make sure Timber remained in a healthy weight bracket and when we lucked out and found it on clearance at our local grocery store, we were encouraged to buy a couple of bags. Fortunately, it lived up to its promises; within a week, Timber's weight stabilized and by the end of the second week, Timber had actually shed a few ounces.
The Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food comes in hard pieces that range slightly in shape and size. The pieces are brown and tan and range from oval to three-point to cylindrical. They are about 3/8” in diameter and 1/8” thick, so they are ideal for all sizes of cat. This cat food does not attempt to mimic the shapes (real or stylized) of any of the ingredients.
Ease Of Preparation
Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food is a hard cat food that comes in a small bag, so preparation only involves opening the bag and measuring out the proper serving size for your cat, as determined by its weight. For both Timber and Elim, that means a 1/2 – 3/4 cup serving (each) and the five pound bag lasts only two weeks at that rate of consumption with the two cats (though ours is lasting longer because Elim continues to prefer and consume more wet cat food).
Timber And Elim’s Reactions
This cat food smells only slightly like chicken or meat; it is not a very aromatic cat food. The cats seem to recognize the sound of the Iams bag moving around and when I pour out the Weight Control cat food, Timber at least pads over to check it out.
Timber clearly enjoys the Weight Control Cat Food. He will eat his full serving over the course of two feedings in a day and he still seems excited by this cat food, even after a month of it (he can be finicky from time to time). Elim still has a preference for wet cat food, but when none is available to him, he will come out and eat the Iams Weight Control cat food, but he has never once finished his entire serving.
Nutrition
The Weight Control Cat Food is a very nutritious cat food. The guaranteed analysis of it indicates that it has a minimum of 28% crude protein and 11% crude fat. With no more than 3% crude fiber and 10% moisture, this is a food that is very balanced. This food also has notable amounts of Magnesium and Taurine. Always have adequate water near your cat’s feeding area!
As well, those who are concerned about what goes into their pets will be pleased by how this is a mostly natural cat food this is, though the bottom two-thirds of the ingredients list are preservatives, vitamins and minerals. The main ingredients are chicken by-product, corn grits, and corn meal. While only the end of ingredient list is a chemistry equation I can barely read, the primary ingredients are all recognizable. Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food is a very balanced cat food.
Overview
Iams Proactive Health Weight Control Cat Food is good and both my cats consume it. For those who need a quick, reliable, way to manage their cats' health, this is a great cat food for that - even if it is an expensive one.
