The Good: Chocolate tastes all right, Peppermint aftertaste is nice

The Basics: Peeps Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate thrilled my dog Myah and made me sorry my wife ultimately spent so much money on them!
On Black Friday, my wife and I went out shopping with her family. We went around to some local stores and, because we are considerate neighbors and will not leave our Siberian Husky Myah to howl in our apartment, we brought her with us. After shopping and braving a pretty nasty snowstorm, we went out to dinner. Smartly, I hid all of the animal food we bought in places that Myah could not get to it. Rather stupidly, I did not think to hide the sealed package of Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps that I oohed and ahhed at and my wife bought, knowing I would review them (I was half excited by the product, half hoping to have a popular review like my review of Cadbury Screme Eggs – here! – before Christmas). Myah ate the package of Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps and after being concerned for our dog’s health and appropriately punishing the canine for the crime, I was dismayed that my wife would not pick me up more.
Thus, it was a pleasant surprise to me to find the Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps in my stocking this year. Unfortunately, they were not worth the wait. Somehow, Myah’s breath smelled minty after devouring the stolen candies, but there was no such luck for me after eating them! These were way too weak to please a mint lover.
Basics
Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are a marshmallow candy that were introduced in 2012 during the Christmas Season. Thus far, they are a pack of three white Peeps chicks with tiny red flecks of crystal sugar with about 1/8" dark chocolate on the underside of the chick. These are not coated in chocolate all the way around (there is another product for that) and they were released by Just Born. The three pack of Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps tended to run $1.99 - $2.99, which is about twice the average price of a four-pack of the regular peeps.
Each Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peep is almost two inches long by 3/4" wide by 3/4" tall and they are sugar-coated marshmallow candies with a very thin chocolate shell on the underside.
Ease Of Preparation
Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are pretty simple to prepare. Simply unwrap the plastic on the plastic container and pull that out. Each of the Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps is contained within its own plastic shell. Unlike the regular Peeps, the Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps tend not to have their sugar fall off. As a result, they seem to be more clean and simple to eat; simply remove it from the package and eat it!
Taste
Peeps Milk Chocolate candies smell like milk chocolate, more than mint. There is a whiff of peppermint when the package is first opened, but that is all.
Sadly, on the tongue, these candies are entirely underwhelming. The chocolate flavor is light and only slightly dark. It has a waxier, milkier flavor than a deal dark chocolate lover would accept as dark chocolate. The flavor of chocolate is entirely muted, though, when the tongue comes into contact with the sugar crystals. The generic sugar flavor entirely overwhelms the chocolate dip that is the bottom of the Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps. The real disappointment here is that the “Candy Cane” flavor is almost entirely absent from this candy. Instead, there is a very faint peppermint aftertaste, but that is it for mint flavoring. The mint flavoring is there, but it is not at all robust enough to be considered actual candy cane.
Nutrition
Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps make no claims to be healthy. This is a good thing because they would fail if they did! The three Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps in a package are a single serving. A serving has 170 calories, forty of which are from fat. There are 10 mg of sodium and only 1 gram of protein. There are no vitamins or other nutritional benefits to Peeps, outside 4% of one's RDA of Iron.
This is because Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are a candy. The main ingredients in Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are sugar, dark chocolate and corn syrup. Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are gluten free and are not Vegan compliant considering there is gelatin, milk and carnuba wax. There is nothing overly unfamiliar in the ingredient list, so these are not the worst candies ever.
Storage/Clean-Up
Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are easy enough to store. The Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps my wife surprised me with for the holidays had an expiration date of July 2013, so keeping them at room temperature or below seems to keep them fresh for a long period of time.
Clean-up is as easy, unless the chocolate melts onto something. Because the sugar does not seem inclined to fall off, truly the melting chocolate - or the melting Peep - is the only real worry. Like the preparation, there is nothing hard about storing or cleaning up after this candy.
Overall
Candy Cane Dipped In Chocolate Peeps are unusually expensive for no great return on the taste front. Unless Just Born revamps their formula next year, they are not worth picking up and for those looking for after-Christmas values, these can be safely passed by.
