The Good: Tastes good, Not entirely un-nutritious, Inexpensive, Tastes like Egg Nog!
The Bad: Not the most robust flavor.
The Basics: Edy’s Egg Nog Ice Cream is worth trying for anyone who likes egg nog!
I am intrigued by how so many great drinks translate into amazing ice creams. Oddly, some of the best ice creams that mimic other things tend to be seasonally available flavors. Ironically, for my second Edy’s ice cream I have found to review, I am reviewing another one of these seasonally available flavors. My first experience was with their limited edition Pumpkin ice cream (reviewed here!) and now, I have picked from the first batch of Egg Nog ice cream that has arrived locally!
Edy’s’s Egg Nog Ice Cream is an incredibly simple ice cream with no additives. It is flavorful, distinct in its Egg Nog flavor and sweet.
Basics
Edy’s ice cream comes in a one and a half quart cylindrical container. The Egg Nog Ice Cream is a smooth, creamy ice cream: the basic ice cream unadorned or mixes with any other additives. At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Edy’s ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream. This is a Limited Edition ice cream, available from Edy’s only in the autumn and winter.
Ease Of Preparation
Edy’s Egg Nog Ice Cream is a very basic ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Egg Nog Ice Cream.
Taste
The Egg Nog Ice Cream smells like nutmeg. It is the distinct and recognizable scent that is strongly associated with Egg Nog.
The Edy’s Egg Nog ice cream is strongly creamy. The flavor is very milky, like a vanilla bean ice cream. The flavor finishes tasting exactly like egg nog, with a hint of nutmeg and cinnamon. The milky, cream flavor drowns out the aftertaste of cinnamon. Nicely, this ice cream is not dry and does not have a strong aftertaste. It tastes more and more like store-bought egg nog as it warms slightly.
Nutrition
The Edy’s Egg Nog Ice Cream is a very light, smooth, ice cream with no additives. The one and a half quart container represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 140 calories, 50 of which are from fat. The six grams of fat represent 9% of the RDA of fat, with 18% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 3.5 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 25 mg of cholesterol (that’s 8% of the RDA!) and 35 mg of Sodium (1% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 6% of the RDA of Calcium and 4% of the RDA of Vitamin A in the Egg Nog Ice Cream.
Edy’s has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Skim Milk, cream, and sugar, Egg Nog is a decent ice cream! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list.
Storage/Clean-Up
Edy’s ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of July 18, 2013).
The Egg Nog ice cream is very light, opaque yellow, and will certainly stain light clothing, at the very least. When the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.
Overall
Edy’s Egg Nog ice cream is flavorful, but could be a little more powerful on that front. I love egg nog, but this ice cream did not knock me out the way I hoped it would have. Even so, anyone who loves egg nog is likely to want to pick up a container of Edy’s Egg Nog ice cream while it is available for the season!
