Everybody’s Nuts Garlic & Onion Pistachios Are Unfortunately Underflavored!

The Good: Fairly nutritious, Easy to open.
The Bad: Pricey, Exceptionally light on flavor!
The Basics: The Garlic & Onion Pistachios from Everybody’s Nuts! left me discouraged by how underwhelming the flavor of these premium pistachios could be.

I am a big fan of pistachios. For my birthday, my wife decided it would be fun to branch me out from the Wonderful (brand) Pistachios (here!) that I reviewed and enjoyed. Given my experience with Planters Flavor Grove Jalapeneno flavored pistachios (reviewed here!), I was a bit wary when my wife presented me with a bag of Everybody’s Nuts! Garlic & Onion Pistachios. My wariness turned to disappointment when I began to consume them, not because the pistachios were bad, but rather because they lacked a vibrant flavor one might hope for when promised garlic and onion.

Basics

Everybody’s Nuts! Garlic & Onion flavor Pistachios are a ready-to-eat snack that attempts to zest up pistachio nuts with something other than the traditional salt flavor. While I applaud the initiative, the execution leaves a lot to be desired (I think Everybody’s Nuts! made the pepper flavored pistachios I used to enjoy!). Packaged in a 7 oz. stiff plastic bag, the pistachios are kept fresh until opened. After cutting open the top of the bad, consumers have access to the pistachios that are still in their shells. The shells and any exposed portion of the nut beneath are coated with a salt-like powder that gives them their Garlic & Onion flavor (what they have of that flavor!).

Outside the occasional orange clump of flavor powder, the Garlic & Onion Pistachios look just like ordinary pistachios. Each 7 oz. container has approximately three and a half servings after they have been shelled. These nuts are easily dispensed through the wide top of the bag. To be fair to Everybody’s Nuts!, I encountered no shells without nuts, a few nuts without shells, and no shells too closed to gain easy access to the nuts in my bag!

Ease Of Preparation

These are flavored nuts, so preparing them is as easy as opening the bag they come in, cracking the shell open, and consuming them. There is no trick or work beyond that needed to eat Garlic & Onion flavor pistachios.

Taste

The Garlic & Onion Pistachios smell more nutty than like either of the seasonings that are on them. This, unfortunately, adequately prepares the consumer for the experience of the nuts.

Cracking the shell open, the Garlic & Onion Pistachios are universally salted. However, the promised garlic and onion flavor is not robustly present. In fact, at best, they tastes like onion salt on some of the pistachios, about one in every three were flavored sufficiently to convince my tastebuds they were getting something other than simply a standard, salted, pistachio. Other than that, the bag of pistachios tasted mildly flavored, but not at all distinctly of garlic or onion.

I did, however, experience the promised garlic and onion flavor from these pistachios, but only in the most inconvenient of ways. After consuming several, I burped. The flavor of my burp was very garlic and onion flavored!

Nutrition

Having reviewed many types of nuts, I am not surprised that on the nutrition level Everybody’s Nuts! pistachio nuts are a bit of a mixed blessing. A serving is considered 30 grams (shelled) which is about half a cup. With the standard recommended serving size, the nuts have 13 grams of fat! That's 20% of the RDA of fat, with 8% of the RDA coming from the one and a half grams of saturated fat! There is 4% of the RDA of calcium and six grams of protein, which is almost enough to make one look the other way on the fat content! In addition to potassium (280mg) and a predictably elevated amount of salt (270 mg sodium!), these nuts have iron and Vitamin B6 and Thiamin, but not much else at all.

The ingredients list for these Garlic & Onion flavor Pistachios is fairly short, which is nice because most of the ingredients are natural. Everybody’s Nuts! are made primarily of Pistachios, salt, and onion. There is nothing unpronounceable in these nuts and the ingredients are generally healthy. Obviously, these nuts are manufactured on equipment that processes nuts.

Storage/Clean-up

Just as with the preparation, Everybody’s Nuts! Garlic & Onion flavor Pistachios nuts are low stress when it comes to storage and cleanup. Storage is simple when the nuts are kept in their bag at room temperature or cooler. Kept sealed in their bag, these nuts would not expire until May 7, 2013.

Everybody’s Nuts! Pistachios are easy to clean up after as well. Simply wash your hands after eating to get any of the powder dust off. There should be no other residue, but if there is, it may easily be wiped away with a damp cloth.

Overall

Everybody’s Nuts! Garlic & Onion flavor Pistachios are a great idea, poorly executed that are expensive considering how underwhelming they are on the flavor front (for the promised flavor).
