Sweet, But Breyers Blasts Heath Bar Ice Cream Does Not Fully Land The Flavor.

The Good: Yummy, Reasonably priced, Nothing bad in it
The Bad: Not all that nutritious, Chocolate flavor in the ice cream never pops.
The Basics: Breyers Blasts Heath Bar Ice Cream is a good flavor for those who like caramel, but not who want a diverse taste experience.

One of my wife’s favorite candies are Heath Bars. She has enjoyed them for longer than I have known her and so when I saw that Ben & Jerry’s was not the only ice cream that had a Heath Bar flavor, I eagerly picked it up for her. The other brand which licenses Heath Bar toffee is Breyers Blasts! and their Heath Bar ice cream is good.

Unfortunately, though, Breyers Blasts! Heath Bar frozen dairy dessert is hardly a taste revelation; it is surprisingly monotonous in its flavoring and entirely lacks any flavor other than caramel. That is not bad, but it is hardly as exciting as it could (and ought to) be.

Basics

Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Heath Bar Ice Cream is a mostly smooth ice cream: the basic ice cream has small Heath Bar chunks throughout and one or two slightly larger ones. There is also a swirl of caramel in this ice cream, though I found my carton had remarkably little in the way of caramel swirl. That’s all right, though; the ice cream is very caramel in its flavoring.

At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream.

Ease Of Preparation

The Heath Bar Ice Cream is an ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Heath Bar Ice Cream.

Taste

The smell of Heath Bar ice cream is very lightly one of caramel or toffee. This is one lightest scented Breyers ice creams I have tried.

In the mouth, Heath Bar ice cream is very much a caramel-flavored delight. This is an exceptionally sweet ice cream and one that is surprisingly homogenous on the taste front. Despite the chocolate-covered toffee bits in it, the Heath Bar ice cream is very much just defined by a caramel flavor. The additives add texture, not flavor.

Nutrition

The Breyers Blasts Heath Bar Ice Cream is a fairly light “frozen dairy dessert” with light additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 140 calories, 45 of which are from fat. The five grams of fat represent 8% of the RDA of fat, with 15% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 3 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 10 mg of cholesterol (that’s 3% of the RDA!) and 90 mg of Sodium (4% RDA). The only other real nutrient is a gram of protein, though there is also 4% of the RDA of Calcium in the Heath Bar Ice Cream.

Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milk, corn syrup, and sugar the Heath Bar is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. The Heath Bar Breyers Blasts! is Kosher, but not gluten free. There are no allergy warnings on the package.

Storage/Clean-Up

Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of November 15, 2013).

The Heath Bar ice cream is fairly light frozen dairy dessert. However, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. The chocolate pieces and caramel swirl seem most obviously problematic with melting and staining. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

The Breyers Blasts Heath Bar ice cream is an enjoyable ice cream, but a less enthusiastic “recommend” from me as it is not a truly flavorful or interesting ice cream. It is sweet and good, for sure, but having had toffee ice creams before with real toffee flavor and chunks, this is a little bit of a (comparative) letdown.
