The Good: Delicious, Surprisingly nutritious on some unexpected fronts.
The Bad: More expensive than other ice creams.
The Basics: Ben & Jerry’s Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream is actually quite good, justifying its expense!
It is impossible to be a credible reviewer of ice creams and not review Ben & Jerry’s ice creams. It’s like a law. You have to have some idea of how different brands relate to one another as well as absolute standards. So, for my very first “professional” experience with Ben & Jerry’s, I was lucky enough to get three pints half price at my local grocery store. For my first pint, I’m cracking open the Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler ice cream! I know that this is not an ice cream I am inherently predisposed toward and I know that because I have never had this ice cream before now. And now that I have had it, I am wondering if I have to change what I am predisposed toward!
The Ben & Jerry’s Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream is also my first experience with anything regarding Willie Nelson outside hearing his song “Always On My Mind” and seeing him on Monk!
Basics
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream comes in a pint container. The Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream is a chunky ice cream: the basic peach ice cream mixed with cinnamon, peach chunks and a actual bits of cobbler crust. While I had many bites that didn’t have any of the peaches or cobbler bits, none of the ice cream lacked cinnamon. Like many Ben & Jerry’s premium ice creams, Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler is loaded with good stuff so most bites do have chunks of the cobbler bits or peaches!
At (locally) $4.19 a pint, the Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is an expensive ice cream. That I found it on clearance for $2.10 was a steal!
Ease Of Preparation
The Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream is a loaded ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream!
Taste
Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler ice cream smells lightly like fruit and mostly like pie crust. The light peach scent is very light, the pie crust scent is actually a little more overwhelming than the fruit scent.
On the taste front, Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler ice cream is initially dry with cinnamon and what almost tastes like pie-flavored ice cream. Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler is filled with pulverized pieces of pie crust and that makes for a drier and less sweet flavor than most ice creams. But then, there are the bites with the actual peaches in them. Those bites are sweet and delightful and they overwhelm the basic ice cream that serves as the medium for the Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler. The cinnamon and peaches blend together to create a flavor that truly is like having cobbler with a dollop of ice cream on it. The pie pieces pop up infrequently, but add confirmation to the consumer that the flavor they believe they are tasting is coming from a pie or cobbler instead of just some facsimile of that.
Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler is sweeter, but drier than many ice creams, so it leaves the mouth with a drier aftertaste than most.
Nutrition
The Ben & Jerry’s Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream is a fairly heavy ice cream with heavy additives. The pint represents four half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 220 calories, 80 of which are from fat. The nine grams of fat represent 14% of the RDA of fat, with 30% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 6 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 50 mg of cholesterol (that’s 17% of the RDA!) and 45 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrients are three grams of protein and 30% of the RDA of Vitamin C, though there is also 10% of the RDA of Calcium and Vitamin A in the Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ice Cream.
Ben & Jerry’s has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Cream, Skim milk, and peaches, the Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler might actually be the first real ice cream I have reviewed! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. The Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler Ben & Jerry’s is Kosher, but not marked as gluten free. There are no allergy warnings on the package.
Storage/Clean-Up
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my pint had an expiration date of January 31, 2013, which made it even more baffling why it would be clearanced now).
The Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler ice cream is fairly heavy, but the peach and cinnamon chunk are sticky and will stain. As well, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.
Overall
The Ben & Jerry’s Willie Nelson’s Country Peach Cobbler ice cream might be the first ice cream with fruit in it that I had an instant affinity for! This is a delightful ice cream and part of the strength of it is that I endorse it and I am not a fan of pies or cobblers!
