The Good: Not bad ingredients, Reasonably priced
The Bad: Not very flavorful or distinctive.
The Basics: The Breyers Blasts Klondike Krunch Ice Cream is all right, but nothing at all special.
The Breyers Blast’s line of “frozen dairy dessert” (ice cream) is a weird collection of ice creams. Most of them make perfect sense (at least to me). Out of the line, which supposedly has only a dozen flavors, there are a couple that make no rational sense. While Waffle Cone and the flavor loaded with Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups have a certain obvious appeal, the new Klondike Krunch is a bit more esoteric. After all, Klondike bars are ice cream treats already. Why would Breyers need a flavor of boxed ice cream with an ice cream treat broken up in it?!
The Breyers Blasts’s Klondike Krunch Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with broken chocolate shell and crisp rice balls added to it. It is essentially a Crunch Bar Klondike Bar made into a half-gallon of ice cream.
Basics
Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Klondike Krunch Ice Cream is a mostly smooth ice cream: the basic ice cream has the additives, but they do not interfere with getting the dessertt out of the container. Many bites in the half gallon did not have any additives. The crisp rice pieces were few and far between, so it was very rare to get bites that had the whole flavor in them, but the flavor is not very strong at all.
At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream.
Ease Of Preparation
The Klondike Krunch Ice Cream is a lightly enhancedice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Klondike Krunch Ice Cream.
Taste
The Klondike Krunch Ice Cream smells like vanilla bean. The scent is potent and surprisingly inviting. I am not a fan of vanilla, yet opening up the carton of Klondike Krunch frozen dairy dessert is absolutely delightful!
On the tongue, Klondike Krunch tastes vanilla in only a few of its bites. Most of the bites have pulverized chocolatey shell bits and crisp rice. The rice bits are just like Rice Crispies or Crunch bars. The chocolate flavor is initially more of a texture than a flavor and it has the same waxy, slightly sweet flavor as the shell on a Klondike Bar. I found about one in five bites in the Klondike Krunch had the crisp rice, which is dry and very much more a texture than a flavor. It does, however, break up the vanilla ice cream nicely.
Klondike Krunch has a slightly sweet and dry aftertaste to it. Even as this ice cream warms up, the chocolate in it does not take on a more distinctive or interesting flavor. Instead, it remains waxy and flaccid in its flavoring.
Nutrition
The Breyers Blasts Klondike Krunch Ice Cream is a fairly light ice cream with surprisingly light additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 140 calories, 80 of which are from fat. The seven grams of fat represent 11% of the RDA of fat, with 25% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 5 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 5 mg of cholesterol (that’s 2% of the RDA!) and only 35 mg of Sodium (1% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 4% of the RDA of Calcium and Calcium in Klondike Krunch Ice Cream.
Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milk, corn syrup, and sugar, the Klondike Krunch is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list.
Storage/Clean-Up
Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of October 17, 2013).
The Klondike Krunch ice cream is fairly light, but the chocolate bits will stain if they melt. As well, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.
Overall
The Breyers Blasts Klondike Krunch ice cream is pretty banal; it is not incredible in any way. Those who like Klondike bars might be amused by the novelty of eating what is essentially a Klondike Bar without having to use their hands, but for those who are serious ice cream aficionados, Klondike Krunch is a frozen dairy dessert that may be passed by.
