The Good: Delicious, Not entirely un-nutritious, Reasonably priced
The Bad: Oddly harder than other ice creams.
The Basics: Once I was able to wrestle the Breyers Blasts Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream out of its package, this turned out to be an absolutely delightful ice cream!
I’m not sure what the absolute difference is between an ice cream and a “frozen dairy dessert” is supposed to be, but given how the Breyers Blasts! “frozen dairy desserts” are made primarily of milk, I would have thought it could be classified as an ice cream. As it is, it might just be the Truth In Advertising Laws that force the distinction (i.e. that it is milk and not cream in the frozen dairy dessert). And the Chips Ahoy! Breyers Blasts! Is easily one of the most enjoyable ice creams or frozen dairy desserts I have had of late. In fact, the only issue I had with this was that it seems to freeze far harder than other ice creams, making it a bit more of a hassle to get out of its container.
The Breyers Blasts’s Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with multiple additives, from a fudge swirl to mini Chips Ahoy! chocolate chip cookies and little chocolate chunks.
Basics
Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream is a chunky ice cream: the basic ice cream mixed with fudge, chocolate chip cookie pieces and a fair amount of chocolate bits. While I had many bites that didn’t have any of the fudge swirl or chocolate chunks, none of the ice cream lacked pieces of cookies or pulverized cookies. The full chocolate chip cookies were surprisingly prevalent in this ice cream, making it an intriguing mix of ice cream and cookies.
At (locally) $5.79 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream. That I found it on clearance for $2.89 was a steal!
Ease Of Preparation
The Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream is a loaded ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream, though this one is harder in its frozen state, so you’ll need a good, solid ice cream scoop!
Taste
The Chips Ahoy! ice cream smells exactly like the chocolate chip cookies that are in the ice cream. There is not the hint of the creamy vanilla that surrounds all of the cookie pieces in the bouquet. Instead, this ice cream smells delightfully, completely, of chocolate chip cookies!
As far as the taste goes, one of the delightful aspects of the Chips Ahoy! ice cream is how each bite is different. Even the most pure white portions of the ice cream do not taste like vanilla, they taste like cookies and cream, like there is a grainy chocolate sprinkle in the basic ice cream. But then, one bite is rich with chocolate and a fudgy taste from the chocolate swirl in the ice cream. The next, one gets both a giant chocolate chunk and a piece of frozen cookie that breaks apart in the mouth, cutting through the cookies and cream flavored ice cream with a dry, distinctive taste. And in the next, it’s all the flavor of baked cookie, as if that flavor was perfectly frozen into an ice cream! Each bite of this ice cream has a variable amount of chocolate chunks, fudge swirl and actual cookie pieces, but every bite is – at the very least – a delightful cookies and cream base!
Depending on what bite one finishes with, the Chips Ahoy! ice cream may or may not leave a dry aftertaste in one’s mouth. If it is a bite heavy in cookies, then it will leave your mouth dry. Otherwise, this is a perfectly delightful ice cream flavor!
Nutrition
The Breyers Blasts Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream is a fairly heavy “frozen dairy dessert” with heavy additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 140 calories, 45 of which are from fat. The five grams of fat represent 8% of the RDA of fat, with 15% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 3 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 5 mg of cholesterol (that’s 2% of the RDA!) and 70 mg of Sodium (3% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 6% of the RDA of Calcium in the Chips Ahoy! Ice Cream.
Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milk, sugar, and corn syrup, the Chips Ahoy! is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. The Chips Ahoy! Breyers Blasts! is Kosher, but not gluten free. There are no allergy warnings on the package.
Storage/Clean-Up
Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of January 31, 2013, which made it even more baffling why it would be clearanced now).
The Chips Ahoy! ice cream is fairly heavy, but the fudge swirl is sticky and will stain. As well, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.
Overall
The Breyers Blasts Chips Ahoy! ice cream is absolutely delightful and well worth picking up!
