A Sweet Light Coffee Ice Cream, Breyers Coffee Ice Cream Is Satisfying!

The Good: Tastes good, Not entirely un-nutritious, Inexpensive
The Bad: Not as flavorful as coffee lovers will hope.
The Basics: Breyers Coffee Ice Cream is delicious, but sweeter and creamier than it is true to a coffee flavor.


I am a big fan of coffee. So, as I begin reviewing more ice creams, it makes sense that I would gravitate toward coffee ice creams. Following on the heels of Starbucks Coffee Signature Hot Chocolate ice cream (reviewed here), I eagerly picked up a half gallon of Breyers Coffee ice cream!

Breyers’s Coffee Ice Cream is an incredibly simple ice cream with no additives. It is flavorful, but the coffee flavor is almost an afterthought to the distinctly milky and sweet principle flavor.

Basics

Breyers ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Coffee Ice Cream is a smooth, creamy ice cream: the basic ice cream unadorned or mixes with any other additives. At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream. This is a good ice cream, if not a truly great one.

Ease Of Preparation

Breyers Coffee Ice Cream is a very basic ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Coffee Ice Cream.

Taste

The Coffee Ice Cream smells just like a coffee house. Opening up the half gallon, one is rewarded with an aroma that is distinct and smells just like walking into a fancy coffee shop. In other words, this smells appropriately like coffee!

The Breyers Coffee ice cream is creamy, sweet, and dry. The initial flavor is milky and creamy, like a cold latte washing very slowly over the tongue. The coffee flavor of this ice cream, dry and strong, comes out more as a secondary taste, about three or four seconds after the creamy primary taste. The coffee flavor is a little sweeter and more subtle than actual coffee, but it is an enjoyable. As the flavor finishes, it is distinctive enough to embody a real coffee flavor.

Nutrition

The Breyers Coffee Ice Cream is a very light, smooth, ice cream with no additives. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 130 calories, 60 of which are from fat. The seven grams of fat represent 11% of the RDA of fat, with 20% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 4 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 20 mg of cholesterol (that’s 7% of the RDA!) and 50 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 8% of the RDA of Calcium and 4% of the RDA of Vitamin A in the Coffee Ice Cream.

Breyers has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milk, cream, and sugar, Coffee is a decent ice cream! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list.

Storage/Clean-Up

Breyers ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of December 17, 2013).

The Coffee ice cream is very light, opaque tan, and will certainly stain light clothing, at the very least. When the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.

Overall

Breyers Coffee ice cream is a fair ice cream that is more enjoyable than it is objectively good.
