Gollum Loves The Purina SmartBlend Salmon And Tuna Flavored Cat Food!

The Good: Gollum loved it, Very nutritious, Some dental benefits
The Bad: Comparatively expensive
The Basics: Gollum gobbled up the Purina One Smartblend Salmon & Tuna flavor cat food with a ferocity and consistency that makes me with it was less expensive!

It has been a little while since my cat, Gollum, has weighed in on matters that concern him. He has slowly been transitioning from his scaredy cat mode – which he has been in for the last month and a half since we got our Siberian Husky Myah – back to his usually prissy self. With all of the attention on Myah, I had been neglecting poor Gollum, our small black cat, a little bit. Financially, I was a little drained from Myah, so I bought Gollum a bag of generic cat food at the local dollar store (I need to review that!). Gollum refused to eat it and after a week of him being on a hunger strike, I did what anyone who loves their cat would do: I bought him something better. In this case, “better” does mean more expensive and with Purina One's Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend, the expense paid off. Gollum has been chowing down on this with a vehemence and preference – I picked up some more of his regular cat food and given the choice, he still goes for this – that is almost scary to watch.

Purina One Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend is a cat food formulated for adult cats and the serving sizes on the package distinguish the proper serving size for cats 5 – 9 lbs and cats 10 – 14 lbs. Gollum has not been below 10 lbs. in years, so his serving size was 2/3 – 1 cup per meal. Gollum made that last a full day . . . except the first two, when he just mowed through it all in an astonishingly fast amount of time. Unfortunately, Purina One Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend is a bit more expensive, so to make it stretch, I started mixing it with the less expensive cat food that Gollum still likes (not the dollar store stuff he refuses).

The Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend food comes with at least types of pieces in each bag, mixed evenly. All of them are hard, so there are decent dental benefits to this cat food that help keep One's feline companion's teeth clean. The bits include: three pointed brown bits, 1/4” square bits and slivers are about half that width. Each of the pieces is about 1/8" thick and this makes them perfectly bite-sized for a cat. These hard, molded pieces are uniform and are excellent for the cat's dental health. Because they are crunchy, they help scrape plaque and tartar off the cat's teeth, helping to freshen the feline's breath. Gollum has great teeth, in part because of treats and foods like this one.

Despite the expense, it is easy to see why cat lovers would want to feed their cats this. First, it does not smell bad at all. The Purina One Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend has a surprisingly neutral scent to it, which is a nice touch and transfers to the cat. Gollum's breath was never bad after eating this particular cat food. Second, this is a pretty nutritious cat food. The guaranteed analysis of it indicates that it has a minimum of 34% crude protein and 13% crude fat, but no more than 2.5% crude fiber and 12% moisture. With 1% calcium, this is a decent cat food for bone and joint health for adult cats.

As well, those who are concerned about what goes into their pets will be pleased by how mostly natural this cat food is. The main ingredients are salmon, brewers rice and corn gluten meal. While the last half of the ingredient list is a chemistry equation I can barely read, the primary ingredients are all recognizable and several are even human friendly! My point is that Purina One Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend cat food is one of the healthier alternatives for cats and it is backed by a guarantee.

In the end, Purina One Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend is a good food for cats. Gollum can be very finicky with change, but he eagerly accepted this cat food, making it a good standby for when he is being moody and I want to be sure he will eat. Unfortunately, it is expensive enough that it remains only a bonus food around my house. As much as I love Gollum, expense will outweigh his taste preference most of the time. That said, he showed a clear taste preference for Purina's One Salmon & Tuna SmartBlend, making it very easy to recommend!
