Good Coffee, Overwhelmed Flavor: Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee!

The Good: Caffeinated, Amazing aroma, Powerful taste
The Bad: More expensive than other Folgers coffee blends, Creamer nullifies its flavor, Does not actually taste like sugar cookies
The Basics: Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee is a good gourmet coffee blend, but not quite the promised flavor.

Every now and then, I find myself in a bit of a disagreement over a product with my wife. On a recent trip, I picked up a bag of Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee and when I started brewing the coffee up, she fell instantly in love with the coffee. I, however, found that the coffee did not really taste like sugar cookies . . . though to be fair sugar cookies have never been a favorite of mine. The Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee lacks a generic sweetened flavor as this is a pretty strong brew.

The Sugar Cookie coffee is good and it does have a subtle cinnamon under flavor.

Basics

One of the dominant coffee roasters and distributors in the United States, Folgers produces a number of blends and is now getting into the premium coffee market. Sugar Cookie is one of the newer blends in the Folgers Gourmet Selections Gourmet Selections line. The Folgers Gourmet Selections Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie coffee is available in stores in a 10 oz. bag. Sugar Cookie is a medium dark premium blend from Folgers Gourmet Selections and tastes like a far more potent roast.

Sugar Cookie Coffee is an aromatic blend that smells potently of coffee and cinnamon and it is a caffeinated blend.

Ease Of Preparation

Sugar Cookie Coffee is remarkably easy to prepare, no advanced culinary degrees necessary! First, open the bag. Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee is vacuum sealed when first purchased, but opening the bag takes care of that. Sugar Cookie Coffee is intended for automatic (drip or percolating) coffee makers, like my Hamilton Beach coffee maker (reviewed here!). This is NOT an instant coffee. As a result, it needs to be brewed.

Consult your coffee maker's instructions for how to brew the coffee. However, as far as the basics go, you'll need a coffee filter, like the permanent coffee filters (reviewed here), which you put the Sugar Cookie Coffee in and then brew through your coffee maker. The directions recommend making a pot at a time and refrigerating the beans to prevent them from absorbing other flavors and aromas.

Taste

Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee smells quite good. The aroma of the Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee is distinctly that of sugar cookies and dark roasted coffee. The Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee smells like fresh baked cookies with a little cinnamon in the bouquet blending with the strong coffee scent one expects from Folgers.

In the mouth, Sugar Cookie Coffee is strong and earthy coffee flavored. There is no real sugar cookie flavor to the taste, despite the decent scent to the coffee. Instead, the Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee tastes potently like dark roasted coffee and little else. The Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee is bitter and strong in a way that is very inviting to coffee drinkers.

With a creamer, the Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee is almost entirely sublimated to the creamer flavor. The strong coffee, oddly-enough, does not seem to be able to hold its own against even a basic creamer, though it does not taste bad with an added flavor.

The Sugar Cookie Coffee, rather surprisingly, leaves almost no aftertaste in the mouth. For such a strong initial coffee flavor, that there is no residual bitterness is very nice.

Nutrition

This is coffee, not something that appears on the nutrition pyramid! Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee does not contribute anything to one's daily recommended allowance of anything. In fact, the bag does not have any ingredients, outside coffee and natural and artificial flavors.

This is a caffeinated blend and it does a decent job of waking the consumer right up. This has no nutrients or calories, unless you add a sweetener or creamer to it.

Storage/Clean-up

Sugar Cookie Coffee ought to be stored sealed in its bag, sealed as tightly as possible. Coffee is known to absorb flavors of food nearby it, so keeping the bag sealed up is highly recommended. There are different schools of thought on refrigerating open coffee and I have a very clean refrigerator with a lot of ways to segregate coffee, so I tend to come down on the side of refrigerate it. Stored properly, this coffee might have easily made it to the October 20, 2017 expiration date found on it, but we didn’t let it survive that long!

After brewing, coffee grounds ought to be disposed of. This does not seem like an ideal coffee to make a second pot with (second brewings I attempted came out 1/2 to 5/8 as potent as the first brewing) unless one is in a household with a number of people some who like powerful coffee and others who like powerful water. These grounds may be thrown in the trash when used or put in a compost pile, if available. Coffee grounds make great compost.

Overall

Folgers Gourmet Selections Sugar Cookie Coffee is a good coffee that does not quite live up to the promised flavor.
