The Basics: A near-perfect action figure, the new Star Wars Vintage Collection Quinlan Vos figure is a surprisingly good addition to the line!
Every now and then, an absolutely obscure Star Wars figure manages to surprise me. When I first saw the Quinlan Vos action figure, I was initially surprised that it did not feature one of the “First Appearance” stickers that several of the new figures have featured. Quinlan Vos, however, was the subject of a Comic Pack figure a few years back and Hasbro was savvy enough to remember their own products well enough. The other surprise for me was just how cool Quinlan Vos actually is as an action figure! In fact, were it not for a niggling coloring issue, this would be a perfect figure!
If Quinlan Vos is not leaping to the front of your memory, you are not alone. Quinlan Vos was a background alien/human seen briefly in The Phantom Menace (reviewed here!). Apparently, on Tatooine, when Qui-Gon Jinn and Jar Jar Binks pass one of the eateries, there is a Jedi just sitting there. That is Quinlan Vos and why Qui-Gon didn’t get help from Tatooine’s resident or visiting Jedi is another one of those annoying mysteries of The Phantom Menace.
The 4" Vintage Collection Quinlan Vos is the latest version of this figure and with this level of quality, it might as well be the last!
Basics
The Vintage Collection Quinlan Vos figure stands 3 7/8" tall. Quinlan Vos is a human or an alien that looks human, save that he has a yellow stripe under his eyes and across his nose. He has pretty formidable dreadlocks and Hasbro did a good job with the molded details on them; one even has a tie! Outside the facial coloring, there is nothing that makes Quinlan Vos distinctive; he appears to be a Jedi who is blending in. Quinlan Vos is cast in a pretty traditional Jedi tunic with belt. The part of the tunic that is below the belt is a blend of fabric and plastic and does not inhibit the figure’s movement at all. He is cast with his right hand to hold his blaster pistol and his left to hold the lightsaber he comes with, though he can hold either in either hand just fine. Quinlan Vos has a holster for his blaster pistol on his right hip.
As for the coloring detail, Quinlan Vos looks pretty much like the very blurry picture on the package. Quinlan Vos is wearing a very plain outfit, but Hasbro did their best to make him appear distinct within those confines. The one tie in his knotted hair is colored cream color to offset the black of his dreadlocks. Similarly, the figure has wraps on his hands that match the color of his under tunic, implying the garment is all one piece underneath his darker tunic. The coloring details are decent when it comes to accents; on his boots and holster, there are tiny metallic-colored buttons and the belt’s buckles for the figure are colored to look metal as well. While Quinlan Vos’s face is somewhat monotonal, it is broken up with the yellow tattoo or face paint that looks authentic. Quinlan Vos also has exceptionally detailed eyes, with the little brown irises having a tiny black pupil in each one!
But, alas, the coloring is also what robs Quinlan Vos of a perfect rating. The figure comes startlingly close, but the head and exposed neck/chest do not match, so the figure looks very off as a result when one looks closely at it.
Accessories
As a Jedi who is hiding so well even his fellow Jedi do not notice him, nor sense his presence, Quinlan Vos comes well-armed enough to take care of himself! Quinlan Vos has a lightsaber, lightsaber hilt and a blaster. The lightsaber is a pretty standard green-bladed lightsaber. It is 2 3/4” long with a silver and black hilt that is colored with exceptional detailing. The 2 1/16” translucent green blade of the lightsaber is permanently attached to the hilt and it is solid.
The blaster is a simple 7/8” long monotonal, sleek gun that is gunmetal color, but is otherwise clean. This gun may be unique to Quinlan Vos and it is exceptionally well-detailed on the surface and fits nicely into the holster on his right hip or into his right hand.
Quinlan Vos also features a lightsaber hilt. The lightsaber hilt is just an unbladed black and silver handle for a lightsaber, 3/4” long. It has a small peg that fits perfectly into a hole on Quinlan Vos’s belt and it looks pretty good hanging there!
Playability
The four inch toy line was designed for play and Quinlan Vos is amazing in that regard. Quinlan Vos figure has exceptional balance, not tipping over even when posed in some fairly outlandish positions, like in a mid-walk pose! The figure does have holes in the bottom of his feet to allow him to stand tall on any number of playsets in outlandish poses or attach to pegs on vehicles.
Quinlan Vos has amazing articulation, which puts this exceptionally minor character above many of his more recognizable counterparts. He has hinged ball and socket joints at the ankles, knees, groin socket, elbows and shoulders, as well as a ball and socket joint which allows for as much movement of his head as his unruly dreadlocks will allow. The wrists and waist each have simple swivel joints. This is an impressively-articulated figure that looks good in almost any pose.
Collectibility
The Quinlan Vos figure is part of the Vintage Collection line that was released in 2012 and he is pretty much guaranteed to sell out given that even the most obscure Jedi always do. Quinlan Vos is Vintage Collection figure VC85 and he is one of the best in the line. I suspect that this one will appreciate so long as it is not included in any subsequent toy lines.
Overview
Quinlan Vos is an absolutely obscure, weird choice for an action figure release. But, Hasbro made him seem surprisingly cool with articulation and detailing that makes for a surprisingly exceptional toy, despite the minor skin coloring issue!
