The Good: Filled with nutrients
The Bad: Dominated by a dry, grainy flavor, Aftertaste, Expensive, Chocolate flavor is quickly overwhelmed
The Basics: The BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars are expensive and not overly flavorful, but they do what they promise on the energy front.
I have not done any activity that would justify my using an energy or meal bar for quite some time. Especially now that my beloved Siberian Husky is gone, I am not going for super-long walks and I certainly don't go for runs any more like I did in my youth. So, when I picked up the BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars, I found myself considering more the flavor than the energizing benefits of the meal bar. Unfortunately, the BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars do not taste all that good and they are pretty expensive, making them a very tough sell with me.
Basics
BSN is a company that is geared toward creating fully nutritious bars that help supplement the usual diet one has. The Chocolate Crunch Bars come in a 1 oz. crispy bar that is foil-wrapped. Each bar represents a single serving and BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch bars are a bar that resembles a rice crispy treat with a Chocolate coating on the bottom and a drizzle of the coating on its top. Each bar is 2 3/8” long by 1 1/4” wide by 1” thick. The heavily textured, exposed, top of the bar contrasts the smooth bottom of the bar. One bar is one portion, so this is very easy to get into on the portion front! These snack bars come sold as single bars or in boxes of 12.
Ease Of Preparation
Eating BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars is not a real challenge. After removing the wrapper, simply pull out the bar and take a bite off it. There is no particularly complicated equation to eating this crispy grain bar. This is an entirely ready-to-eat food!
Taste
The Chocolate Crunch BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp smells appropriately chocolatey. The chocolate scent is strong and distinctive enough that just by the scent, one would guess that the BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars was just a flat-out chocolate bar without anything else underneath it.
In the mouth, the BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars taste like rice crispy treats coated in a sweet milk chocolate. The BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars are dry, especially after the chocolate melts off. The dry, grainy flavor dominated the milk chocolate base, completely demolishing the initial sweetness.
The BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars leave an exceptionally dry aftertaste in the mouth. That dry aftertaste lasts for several minutes after the last bite of the bar and removes even the hint of chocolate flavor in the mouth.
Nutrition
BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Protein Bars are intended as a supplemental food or to replace a full meal when one is on the go. Each 1 oz. bar represent a single serving and they have a fair amounts of nutrients in them. Made primarily of protein blend (mostly whey protein), Isomalto-oligosaccharides, and soy protein isolate, the ingredient list is half synthesized ingredients, half recognizable food (like dried egg white). This is not an all-natural food product by any stretch of the imagination. The BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars were produced on equipment that forces them to add a disclaimer about peanuts, tree nuts, milk, wheat, soy, and eggs.
BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars have a noticeable 120 calories (which is a lot in comparison to its physical size), only 30 of which are from fat. A bar represents 10% of one's RDA of saturated fat, though they are low in cholesterol (with only 10 mg). As well, they are surprisingly low in sodium, having only 115 mg (that's 5% of the RDA) per serving. They have ten grams of protein and noticeable amounts of Potassium, Calcium and Iron! These are not vegan compliant and it is unclear why the package notes that the ingredients are domestic and imported in Canada.
Storage/Cleanup
BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Flavor Bars have a fairly decent shelf life around eight months. We picked up ours two months ago and had an expiration date of November 21, 2017. If the chocolate coating on the bottom of the BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars melts, they will stain, so consult your fabric guide if that happens. Otherwise, cleanup is simply throwing the foil wrapper away when you are done with the protein bar.
Overall
BSN Syntha-6 Protein Crisp Chocolate Crunch Bars are hardly a good example of a meal bar as they are more expensive and less flavorful than many of their competitor's products.
