Below The Beef, Purina Beneful Originals With Beef Dog Food Is Mostly Filler!

The Good: Myah will eat it, Not overly expensive
The Bad: Not the most impressive ingredients or nutritional benefits, Myah prefers other dog foods.
The Basics: Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food is harder to recommend than other Beneful products Myah has tried!

Recently, my Siberian Husky Myah began eating a very high-end dog food, the Honest Kitchen Grain Free Base Mix (reviewed here!) and that dog food led me to start truly looking at the ingredients in various dog foods. I have long kept Myah on a diet of dog foods where real meat ingredients are the first ingredient. That search blinded me to the ingredients that come after meat in the ingredients list. When Myah began eating the Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food, I noticed that she was getting the runs more frequently and I did not understand why. But then I looked at the ingredients list for the Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food and for the first time it occurred to me that while the first ingredient is meat, the four ingredients that followed are all grains and the proportion of grain in this Beneful dog food vastly outweighs the meat ingredients.

Basics

A single serving of Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food is two cups for a big dog like Myah and she is supposed to get two such servings per day, so a full bag does not last long at all with a big dog. The Originals With Beef has five different shapes mixed together about evenly. The shapes range from a 7/8” long light brown bone-shaped piece to a 3/8" in diameter green pea-like piece. All of the pieces have a mealy, textured appearance and are very hard. In fact, they has a squishy property, which is similar to a puffed corn cereal for humans, just a little bit harder. Myah often eats these several pellets at a time.

Ease Of Preparation

As a dry dog food, preparation of Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food is as easy as opening a bag and measuring out the pellets inside. There is no further prep needed.

Myah’s Reaction

The Originals With Beef smells very mealy. There is nothing meaty to the aroma of this dog food; it smells very grainy. Myah consumes the Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food, but not nearly as eagerly as other food options she is given. Myah will eat the Purina Beneful Originals With Beef, but she shows no preference toward it. But Myah's real reaction is in the other end of the consumption process; Myah gets the runs whenever she eats the Purina Beneful Originals With Beef, even after two weeks of having it as a daily meal!

Nutrition

Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food smells grainy, so it is unsurprising that the ingredients in it are overwhelmingly grain-based. Made primarily of Beef, whole grain corn, and barley, the ingredient list includes separate vitamin and minerals, implying that extra nutrition is just sprayed on. According to the guaranteed analysis, Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food has at least 23% crude protein and 12% crude fat, but no more than 4% crude fiber and 14% moisture. As a dry dog food, it is highly recommended that you have adequate water available for your dog when serving your pet Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food.

Overall

Purina Beneful Originals With Beef dog food is a simple dog food that is overpriced for what it is and is nowhere near all it could be for canine nutrition.
