Flavorful And Healthy, Special K Honey Barbecue Cracker Chips Are Fun!

The Good: Exceptionally healthy, Very flavorful
The Bad: Comparatively expensive
The Basics: Special K’s Honey Barbecue Cracker Chips are a decent healthy way to snack when one is on a diet!

My wife and I have started to eat healthy again. It’s that time of year and I want to fit into my pants better, so I’ve been stocking up on healthy snacks. I have now returned to eating Special K Cracker Chips, like the Southwest Ranch cracker chips (reviewed here!) and the Cheddar flavor cracker chips (reviewed here!). Tonight, I’m happily reviewing the Honey Barbecue Cracker Chips that I have since fallen in love with. The Honey Barbecue Cracker Chips are one of the better flavors of Special K Cracker Chips.

The nutritional benefits of these chips make them worth recommending, despite the expense.

Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips, for those who are not familiar with them, are something right between crackers and snack chips. They are reminiscent of small, thin rice cakes and are very light. Special K has marketed their Special K Cracker Chips chip line as an alternative to fattier, saltier chips and rice cakes. They are actually flavorful enough to compete, but with only three and a half servings, they are comparatively expensive. The Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips feature a dusting of Honey Barbecue powder on many of the chips. The chips look like little round chips that are slightly curved, almost like mini suction cups!

Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips come in a 4 oz. box. With the 30 g serving size representing 27 chips, the 4 oz. box has only about three and a half servings. The chips are round and pretty uniformly 1 7/8” in diameter. They are white with maroon specks where the flavor powder is and they have a similar lightness to rice cakes.

Ease Of Preparation

Special K Cracker Chips Honey Barbecue are simple to enjoy; all you need do it open the bag inside the box and remove the chips from it! There is no trick to eating Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips; they are a snack that is ready to go from the bag to the mouth.

Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips smell like onions and catsup, so they really have a barbecue flavor from the scent to the lips.

As for the taste, the initial flavor is sweet and the honey flavor is initially subtle, but the sweetness fades to the tomato flavor from the barbecue sauce. The barbecue sauce flavor is sweet, then tangy and completely distinctive. This tastes exactly like barbecue sauce, with a dry aftertaste that comes from the rice of the chips.

These chips have a slight, dry aftertaste, though it is not unpleasant.

Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips are, as they are billed, a very healthy snack. The main ingredients are potatoes, potato starch and brown rice flour before the ingredients take a turn into the weird and chemical-sounding. I was a little more surprised to note that the shelf life of these chips is very short; the box we bought the two weeks ago was set to expire in July of this year.

Each thirty gram serving of Special K Cracker Chips Honey Barbecue has 110 calories, twenty of which come from fat. There are also 3 grams of dietary fiber. While there are 2.5 grams of fat and 2 grams of protein, there is a noticeable 200 mg of sodium, which represents 8% of one's RDA of sodium. There is a smattering of Iron, but nothing significant in the nutrition department otherwise. There is a dietary note that the Honey Barbecue includes milk, wheat and soy ingredients, which prevents them from being Vegan compliant or gluten-free.

Kept in their bag in the box, Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips will remain fresh for only a couple of months and as long as the bag is resealed, one suspects they will last for a few weeks before getting stale. Honestly, I’m not sure how one would recognize one of these as stale as they have a little “give” to them even when they are fresh!

Cleanup is simple as well. Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips are a dry food and thus leave no mess behind. Because they have the flavor crystals on them, though, they do leave a powdery residue when eaten in quantity. But, if you simply wash your hands and throw out the bag, cleanup is done! I advocate recycling the box, too.

Honey Barbecue Special K Cracker Chips are a flavorful snack option that is healthy and well worth trying!
