Disappointing On The Flavor, Green Giant Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips Sea Salt

The Good: Does not taste bad, Not entirely unhealthy, Good ingredients
The Bad: Very expensive for a salty snack, Not at all flavorful enough.
The Basics: Not likely to replace anyone’s potato chips, Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips from Green Giant flop with me!

When I find something I truly enjoy, I gladly start looking for similar products that can expand my appreciation of the product I enjoyed. So, when I reviewed the Green Giant Zesty Cheddar Roasted Veggie Tortilla Chips (reviewed here!) and enjoyed them, I rushed out to get more of the chips from Green Giant. The next bag of their chips I picked up was the Green Giant Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips. Unfortunately, they were not at all as good.

Basics

Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips, for those who are not familiar with them, are Potato chips made of sweet potatoes. Green Giant has marketed their Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips chip line as an alternative to regular potato chips for only a few months now. The Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips feature an exceptionally thin layer of salt on them. Fortunately, they are not greasy or obviously salted. The chips look very much like crackers, as opposed to chips.

Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips come in various sizes, but always in a bag. The standard size bag that I have found is 5 oz. and for over $4 on its own, that strikes me as very pricey. The chips are square and approximately 1 3/4" on each side and only about 1/8” thick. Most of them are slightly curved.

Ease Of Preparation

Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips Sea Salt are simple to enjoy; all you need do it open the bag and remove the chips from it! There is no trick to eating Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips; they are a snack that is ready to go from the bag to the mouth.

Taste

Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips smell like typical potato chips. In fact, they have the precise scent of kettle chips, like the classic NY Deli potato chips that reached their height of popularity in the 1990s.

On the taste front, Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips only mildly salty. In fact, the flavor is almost identical to the flavor of a Wheat Thins cracker, so those looking for a delightful potato chip is likely to be disappointed. Only about one in five had a robust, salty flavor. On the plus side, the sweetness of these chips cuts the aftertaste entirely; this is not a dry chip, which is an interesting twist.

Nutrition

Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips are a surprisingly natural snack, with only two or three preservatives. Given that the ingredients are mostly whole grain corn flour, sunflower oil and dried sweet potatoes, it is unsurprising how generally good these chips are. These have a shelf life of only a few months, so it's not a great snack to stock up on.

Each one ounce (sixteen chip) serving of Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips has 140 calories, fifty of which come from fat. While there are 6 grams of fat and a gram of protein, there are only 80 mg of sodium, which represents 3% of one's RDA of sodium. The only other significant nutrient is 4% of the RDA of Vitamin A. There is are no dietary notes on these chips.

Storage/Clean-up

Kept in their bag, Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips will remain fresh for only a few months (the bag we bought in early March had a August 21 expiration date. I've never had to deal with issues of freshness for my Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips, probably because this was my first bag and they went relatively quickly.

Cleanup is simple as well. Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips are a dry food and thus leave no mess behind. Because they are rare chip where the flavoring actually stays on the chips, so they do not even mess up one's hands significantly. Simply wash your hands, throw out the bag and cleanup is done!

Overall

Sea Salt Multigrain Sweet Potato Chips are a comparatively underflavored chip that is not at all impressive enough to recommend to snackers, even health food lovers.
