The Good: Yummy, Reasonably priced, Nothing bad in it
The Bad: As it warms, the mint flavor diminishes
The Basics: Breyers Blasts Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream is a nice twist on cookies and cream, but it changes in flavor with only minor melting, robbing it of perfection.
There are so many ice creams that I enjoy and will keep as part of my stockpile, even if they are not perfect, that it is surprising that I ever have new ones to review! From the Breyers Blast! line of frozen dairy desserts, one of the imperfect ones that I truly enjoy, despite my minor issue with it, is the Cookies & Cream Mint.
The Breyers Blasts’s Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream is a simple ice cream with only one additive: Oreo cookie pieces.
Basics
Breyers Blasts ice cream comes in a typical half gallon container. The Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream is a (surprisingly) mostly smooth ice cream: the basic ice cream has only a few sizeable chunks of Oreo cookies in them.
At (locally) $5.99 a half gallon, the Breyers Blasts! ice cream is an affordable, mid-range ice cream.
Ease Of Preparation
The Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream is an ice cream. As an ice cream, preparation is ridiculously simple: one need only open the top of the container, scoop out a half cup and consume! There is no trick to preparing or eating the Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream.
Taste
The Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint ice cream smells is lightly minty in its scent. It has a scent that is mostly that of peppermint, but for some reason, I smell a slight but of spearmint in the bouquet. The chocolate from the cookies is absolutely absent from the aromatic foreshadowing.
On the taste front, the taste is milky and cold, with a muted peppermint flavor that is augmented by the chocolate pieces that are broken up in it. The flavor becomes drier and less sweet where the shattered bits of cookie are present. A the ice cream rises in temperature, it loses its minty coolness. Instead, the dry, chocolate cookie flavor asserts itself and the entire flavor becomes, oddly, blander. It is almost like the flavor of the mint cannot compete with the cookie as it warms or that the peppermint chill is a component of the flavor, not just a temperature. Kept cool, though, this is an intriguing blend of mint and chocolate that is very satisfying. The interloping flavor as the ice cream warms, I realized, is the taste of the icing from the Oreos.
Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint ice cream does have a fairly dry aftertaste, arguably from the cookies.
Nutrition
The Breyers Blasts Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream is a fairly light “frozen dairy dessert” with heavy additives, when they are present. The half gallon represents twelve half-cup servings. In the half-cup serving, there are 120 calories, 35 of which are from fat. The four grams of fat represent 6% of the RDA of fat, with 10% of one’s RDA of saturated fat coming in the 2 grams of saturated fat in this ice cream. One serving has 5 mg of cholesterol (that’s 2% of the RDA!) and 60 mg of Sodium (2% RDA). The only other real nutrient is two grams of protein, though there is also 4% of the RDA of both Calcium and Vitamin A in the Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Ice Cream.
Breyers Blasts has decent ingredients, too. Made primarily of Milk, corn syrup, and sugar the Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint is not, technically, an ice cream, though it sure mimics one well! There is nothing unpronounceable in the ingredients list. The Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint Breyers Blasts! is Kosher, but not gluten free. There are no allergy warnings on the package.
Storage/Clean-Up
Breyers Blasts ice cream is both a frozen and a dairy product, so it is pretty obvious that it must be kept frozen in order to remain viable. Kept frozen it remains fresh for months (my half gallon had an expiration date of August 31, 2013).
The Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint ice cream is fairly light frozen dairy dessert. However, when the ice cream melts and gets onto fabrics, it will require one to wash it right out. On nonporous surfaces, the ice cream wipes off exceptionally easily.
Overall
The Breyers Blasts Oreo Cookies & Cream Mint ice cream starts nicely minty and develops into a mint and chocolate flavor, that unfortunately gets overwhelmed by the taste and texture of the cream filling to the cookies as it warms even just a little.
