The Good: Surprisingly durable, Stores most basic tools, Inexpensive
The Bad: Tool-oriented people will likely need a larger box than this.
The Basics: The Plano Pro X Deep Toolbox is a decent toolbox for repair enthusiasts, with its surprising durability for a plastic toolbox.
As those who read my contributions to my Home & Garden review page know, I have been going through my toolbox of late for my reviews.
The toolbox I have most of my tools stored in is the Plano 16” Pro X Deep Toolbox. This toolbox is a plastic toolbox which is 16” wide, 10” deep and 10” front to back. The Pro X Deep Toolbox is made of a surprisingly solid black plastic which has a matte black finish. On the top lid, there are two compartments with translucent lids which have small dividers intended to store small blades, screws, nails and other small pieces one would not want knocking around the toolbox proper. Inside the toolbox, there is a tray which sets in the top and holds screwdrivers or other, flatter tools. This still leaves about seven inches of depth in the toolbox proper to hold bigger tools, like hammers and mallets, but it does rob some of the space from the toolbox.
It is, however handy for keeping the toolbox organized. Having a tray for screwdrivers and pliers is real nice when working on projects that only require those tools. When I open the toolbox, there they are and not having to set the tray aside on those projects makes this a very convenient toolbox.
The Pro X Deep Toolbox has a single latch in the front, which I was initially wary of. The back has two metal hinges, but the front is sealed by a plastic latch with a metal loop that connects the base to the top. My initial trepidation about this feature has dissipated over the years. In doing over a hundred projects around the house, opening and closing this toolbox at least as many times, there has never been a time when the latch has not caught and the toolbox remained sealed when I pick the box up. This is a surprisingly durable toolbox which has also never fallen open when I have accidentally dropped it.
The handle for the Pro X Deep Toolbox is a plastic handle on the top cover for the toolbox. It has a rounded grip to comfortably fit the hand of the person using the toolbox. Like the latch, the handle has never shown any tendency to wear out or break off from the toolbox, even after almost a decade of use!
The Pro X Deep Toolbox, in addition to being surprisingly durable (while the hard plastic has taken some hits and never fallen open, no part of this toolbox has ever chipped off or cracked in my years of use either), it is very easy to clean. Because it is plastic, it may be hosed out if anything spills in it and one need not worry about rust.
This is a great toolbox for most home repair enthusiasts, if not those working construction.
