The Good: Great taste, Mild nutritional value, Good ingredients, Generally responsible bulk
The Bad: None that I can find!
The Basics: Another amazing flavor of Jelly Belly jelly beans, Sunkist Lemon is worth getting in bulk!

One of the things I enjoy as I reach the culmination of my reviews of Jelly Belly jelly beans is filling in those final blanks on my index page and then discovering the new flavors to keep enhancing my authority on all things Jelly Belly. One of the final flavors as I count down is Sunkist Lemon Jelly Bellys. For those who think these are just Lemon Jelly Bellys (reviewed here!) renamed, you're wrong. The Citrus Assortment Sunkist Lemon Jelly Belly jelly beans have real fruit puree in them and they they are infused with Vitamin C as a result. But as far as taste and appearance goes . . . yeah, they're pretty much identical. That said, they are pretty wonderful in every way!

For those who might never have had Jelly Belly jelly beans, these are easily the best jelly beans on the planet, packing a lot of flavor into a very small size. Unlike most jelly beans which are only vaguely flavored and are more based on colors, Jelly Belly jelly beans have a wide variety of actual flavors, like Plum, Sunkist Lime, the Soda Pop Shoppe Assortment or their signature flavor Buttered Popcorn.

Who needs one to three pounds of Sunkist Lemon flavored Jelly Belly's? Anyone who likes lemon, wants Vitamin C but not the juice on the fingertips (or in the eyes!). In the variable bulk, consumers will tend to find this to be affordable as well as delicious.

Basics

Sunkist Lemon is a flavor of Jelly Belly jelly beans. Jelly Belly jelly beans are approximately one half inch long by one quarter inch wide and they are roughly bean-shaped. These little candies are marketed to taste precisely like Sunkist Lemon and they nail the flavor quite well, though they do taste like Lemon slices with a touch of sugar!

Sunkist Lemon flavored Jelly Belly's are available in a wide array of quantities, but most consumers are only likely to need or want a few pounds. With variable poundage (from one to three pounds), the Jelly Bellys come in a plastic bag which is generally more fragile than other methods of getting them. The Sunkist Lemon flavor is a good one, tasting just like Sunkist - or any other, I suppose - lemons. Even so, I suspect that for most people, a few pounds is adequate.

Sunkist Lemon flavored Jelly Belly's are not easily distinguishable from other flavors of Jelly Bellys as there are other light yellow, translucent beans. Sunkist Lemon is easily mixed up with Lemon, Lemon Drop and Pina Colada Jelly Bellys as they are all four light yellow jelly beans. Of course, purchased in its own bag, there is nothing to worry about when it comes to potentially mixing this bean up with others!

Ease Of Preparation

These are jelly beans, not squeezing lemons to make fresh made lemon juice without getting juice in your eyes. Preparing them is as easy as opening the bag and popping one (or a handful) into your mouth. In the case of the one to three pound bag, one might want to put them in a candy dish of some form as opposed to always going into the bag, to avoid spilling. Then again, the bag can be convenient at times without risking spilling from a dish.

Taste

Sunkist Lemon is a perfect Jelly Belly. Unlike most jelly beans that taste like a combination of gelatin and sugar, Jelly Belly jelly beans actually taste like the flavor they claim to, in this case coming down strongly as a lemon-flavored jelly bean. In fact, the amazing thing about Sunkist Lemon Jelly Bellys is how accurately they capture the tartness of lemons. These may have a sugary coating and start sweet, but they have a sour aftertaste that completes the lemon taste one expects from Jelly Belly.

Unfortunately, this also leaves one with very little to write about when reviewing them; Sunkist Lemon Jelly Bellys taste like lemon, exactly and precisely and exactly like the standard Lemon Jelly Bellys which do not have the Sunkist brand name associated with them!

Nutrition

These are jelly beans, but these are actually made with Sunkist Lemon fruit puree and contain Vitamin C. A serving of these beans contains 30% of one's RDA of Vitamin C! Jelly beans, even Jelly Belly jelly beans, are not a legitimate source of nutrition. These are a snack food, a dessert, and are in no way an adequate substitute for a real meal. A serving is listed at thirty-five beans, with each Jelly Belly jelly bean having approximately four calories. This means that in a single serving, there are 140 calories, which is 12% of your daily recommended intake.

The thing is, Jelly Belly jelly beans are not as bad as they could be in the nutrition area. They have no fat and no protein, but for those who have ever dated a Vegan, these are Vegan compliant because they contain no gelatin! They do have bee's wax in the coating, so be sure just how vigilant your Vegan is before feeding these to one. They have only one percent of the daily sodium with 15 mg and they are gluten free! The main ingredients are sugar, corn syrup and modified food starch, so it's not like this is an all-natural food, but they could be far, far worse.

Storage/Clean-up

Jelly Belly jelly beans have a shelf life of approximately one year and I have yet to run across a stale Jelly Belly (and this flavor is definitely going faster than that). They remain freshest when they are kept in an airtight container (the bag is sufficient if it is kept closed) and they ought to be kept in a lukewarm environment. Storing them in hot places is likely to make the beans stick together and be gross. Kept in a cool, dry place, the beans retain their flavor perfectly.

As for cleanup, unless one allows the Jelly Belly to get hot to the point that the waxy coating on the bean melts, the dyes on these do not bleed or denature, so there is usually no cleanup necessary, not even washing one's hands after eating them (always wash your hands before eating Jelly Bellys, even if you don't have to worry about getting lemon juice in your eyes!). I've never had Sunkist Lemon Jelly Belly's stain anything. That said, it's pretty wild to be able to eat something that tastes so much like Lemons and not have to clean juice off one's fingers afterward!

Overall

Sunkist Lemon Jelly Bellys are excellent and in moderate bulk they can be a real deal, making one want to stock up on them, by the pound or with several! They are a perfect Jelly Belly and with mild nutritional value makes them even better than the regular Lemon Jelly Bellys!
